Happy new year, everyone! It’s hard to believe another year has passed and we’re off and running into 2017. Last week I was reminiscing about how much things have changed in the last 100 years or so, but one thing that hasn’t changed much is making new year’s resolutions. Did you make any? If you did, you better write them on a piece of paper and stick it on your refrigerator, because if you are anything like me, you’ll forget those in a week or so.
Gazing into my crystal ball I couldn’t help notice that Tuesday, Jan. 10 might be a date that a lot of you might want to circle on your calendars because there are a lot of things going on that day to help get you started on achieving some of those resolutions.
I’m sure a lot of you have getting more exercise, losing some weight or just living a bit healthier on your list. You may also have getting out there and meeting new people on your agenda as well, so here’s a few ideas to get you going.
If you are a morning person you might be interested in taking part in Golden Walks — Weekly Sunrise Walks in South Golden. These are hosted by walking aficionado and Golden City Council member Saoirse Charis-Graves. It’s a free one-hour walk that’s very informal. Just meet in front of Bean Foster’s coffee shop, 720 Golden Ridge Road at 7 a.m. for introductions and to warm up a bit. If you want to get a beverage beforehand, show up a little early so you don’t hold everyone up waiting for a cup of coffee. There are restrooms available before and after the walk in the coffee shop.
For those of you who like to run more than walk, then check out the Tuesday Night Trail Runs sponsored by Foothills Running and Cycling Club (FRCC) and the Golden Mountain Runners (GMR). Both of these groups have weekly runs on Tuesday nights. Both groups meet at different locations and run various trails, so you may want to check them both out as they are independent of each other. The FRCC meets at about 6 p.m. and the GMR meets at 6:15 p.m. You can hook up with the FRCC by emailing Kemp at firstname.lastname@example.org or by checking out www.frcclub.com. The GMR has a Facebook page under their old name at www.facebook.com/lookoutmountainrunners.
If you got a new mountain bike for Christmas or even if you are a mountain biking veteran and looking for a relaxing group to ride with that won’t drop you off the side of a cliff, then head over to Big Ring Cycles at 600 12th St. here in Golden. They have weekly Tuesday night rides led by David Bell that leave at 5 p.m. sharp, so don’t be late. Now, keep in mind, these are leisure rides so no King of the Mountain (KOM) or drops, OK? For more info call 303-216-2000.
If your new year’s resolution happens to lean more towards improving your mind than your body but also includes drinking more beer, then the Windy Saddle Café, located at 1110 Washington Ave. in downtown Golden, has just what you are looking for. It’s called Golden Beer Talks and happens on the second Tuesday of the month, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
This is a homegrown endeavor organized by a few local citizens passionate about nurturing community connections, supporting local businesses, and learning a little something new now and then. They center around a brief, informative and entertaining presentation by an expert on an irresistibly enticing topic.
Each event features beer for sale from a local brewery, along with a variety of food and drink offerings from the Windy Saddle kitchen and bar.
The Jan. 10 topic will be about injectable microbots used for removing blood clots, presented by Dr. Keith Neeves. Remember the movie “Fantastic Voyage”? The one where they shrunk people and a submarine down and injected them into someone’s body to remove a blood clot? Well, that kind of thing is real now. Little tiny robots. Seriously. No, they don’t look like Raquel Welch, but it’s still pretty cool!
