An illuminating dance event this weekend

Hold everything. Just when you thought it was safe to put away those costume trunks and boxes for another year, there’s something happening in Golden this weekend that might delay storing those in the closet until next Halloween.

It’s called the Illumination Masquerade Ball and it’s coming up on Nov. 11. OK, so what on earth is that? Well, first let me quote their description of it because, well … I don’t think I could rephrase this my self and quite capture the essence of it.

“Imagine a world of twinkling, crystalline light. A world that entices and calls you to join the mesmerizing whirl of art and beauty. Come, escape from the mundane chores of the season, and remember what magic can happen when you follow the light, the music, the dance, the art of the universe. Come and be teased into another realm — a world where art is life and life becomes art. Where anything can be imagined…”

Now you see what I mean. That’s a rather unique perspective on the event. Now, for those of you who are still wondering what this is all about, let me delve into it a little deeper.

The Illumination Masquerade Ball is presented by Elevation Belly Dance, based right here in Golden. Every year they put on a series of dance workshops and classes which culminates with the Masquerade Ball. The Ball is sort of a separate event that features performances by some of the guest instructors from around the world as well as other performing dance groups. But, it goes a little further than that.

First of all, this is a masquerade ball, so costumes are encouraged, but not required. It all starts with the doors opening at Miners Alley Playhouse at 6 p.m. where you can mingle, grab a cocktail and get in the mood for a stage show that starts at 7 p.m. This will feature headlining performances by Zoe Jakes of Beats Antique, and Moria Chappell, former Artistic Director of the Bellydance Superstars. That goes until about 9:30 p.m.

After the show attendees are guided through a labyrinth filled with surprises down a block to the rest of the Ball at the Old Capitol Grill. Once there you can order food and drinks, there will be open dancing as well as spotlight performances, prizes and surprises as well as a costume contest where prizes will be awarded. There will also be local arts displayed and available by Elizabeth Ashner and others. Then it all culminates with a midnight spectacle. I’m not exactly sure what that means, but it sounds exciting.

This has become an annual event for Elevation Dance and every year they do something new and a little bit different. It’s an extremely creative group and they always come up with fresh ideas. This year the venues have changed and so has the format, so it should be fun and interesting. They strive to provide a really entertaining evening for everyone, not just people into belly dancing. It’s designed to be fun for the general public and introduce them to a different kind of dance performance than you usually find elsewhere.

Tickets run $25-$40 depending on where you choose to sit in Miners Alley Playhouse for the show, but the $40 front row seats are already sold out. The tickets include admission to all the events and shows, but food and drinks are extra and up to you to order once there. To reserve tickets go to elevationbellydance.com and click on Masquerade Ball Tix. They have descriptions of the seating options on there too.

Miners Alley Playhouse is located at 1224 Washington Ave. here in Golden but you enter at the back entrance on Miners Alley. The Old Capitol Grill is located on the corner, one block north at 1122 Washington Ave.

So, if you are looking for something a little bit different to do this weekend, something that will occupy your entire night with entertainment, then check out the Illumination Masquerade Ball. They promise it will be a weekend that is … You guessed it … Illuminating!
