I swear, with all the activity and festivals happening at Parfet Park here in Golden over the last few months, they are going to have to hire the guys that maintain the field for the Broncos to re-sod the place or something. It’s been one busy little park all summer and this month, the fun continues!

While most cities and towns plan for their annual Oktoberfest or harvest celebration we like to do our own thing here in Golden. Since the air is getting a little brisk and cooler with fall upon us, it’s the perfect time of year for the Olympics of hot chili, the Golden “Knock Your Boots Off” Chili Cook-Off and Beer Tasting event.

Yes, it’s an annual event in these parts but this year they have changed to location to Parfet Park at 10th Street and Washington Avenue. It’s going to be happening 1-4 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 14.

This event features dozens of folks as well as restaurants putting forth their best chili creations in several categories. If you like red chili, green chili, white chicken chili, vegetarian chili, buffalo chili plus a few varieties you never heard of then this is the place to be.

Now, be assured that there are very stringent rules applied to the chili for this event, including full compliance with Jefferson County Health Department Guidelines to ensure food safety. There is also one rule that I found both interesting and reassuring. Each chili cook may be required to taste their own chili in front of the judges before turning it in. I guess that’s to either prevent poisoning of the judges or to make sure the stuff isn’t so hot it leaves chemical burns in your mouth. I call it the Game of Thrones rule because it kind of reminds me of cooks having to taste their own food before serving it to the king.

If you like the opportunity to taste over 90 different beers, then this will probably be on your bucket list for sure. There’s going to be live music and a silent auction too. Plus there will be exhibition booths with all kinds of other fun things.

Tickets for the chili tasting by itself run $20 in advance, $25 at the gate. The combo chili and beer tasting tickets run $25 in advance, $30 at the gate. So, basically for 5 bucks extra you get to be able to taste 90 beers. Let’s see … 5 divided by 90 equals … OK, you do the math, that sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

They will be issuing wrist bands so kids are welcome but only adults over 21 will be able to taste the beer. Also, dogs are not allowed at this one so please leave them at home.

The “Knock Your Boots Off” Chili Cook-Off and Beer Tasting is put together by the Golden Chamber of Commerce and the Coors Distributing Company with the funds raised going to the Golden Chamber’s community projects including their scholarship fund for Golden High School and St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

To order tickets in advance go to www.goldenchamber.org/chili-cook-off-beer-tasting/. They have the options listed and take credit cards on line. You can also check out all the rules on there as well. Maybe next year you’ll want to enter your own chili concoction. Entering and setting up your own chili booth is free but keep in mind that you’ll need to make at least ten gallons of the stuff. That’s quite a pot full of chili.

They have a Facebook page for this event but it hasn’t been updated since 2014 so that’s not the place to go for current information. Please note once again that the location has changed from the parking lot behind the old Foss building to Parfet Park.

So put on your boots, the be prepared to have them knocked off. This is one event that can honestly say will be a hot one so plan on an afternoon of adventure for your taste buds as well as fun in our Golden sun.
