Bear Creek Trail improvements on the way

Jeffco Open Space grant and contributes large share of funding.

Construction will begin this summer on Lakewood’s popular seven-mile Bear Creek Trail, funded in part, by a $2 million grant from Jeffco Open Space.

Additional funding for the project will come from a $750,000 grant

awarded from the Land and Water Conservation Fund through the National Parks Service and up to $2 million with TABOR funding from the city of Lakewood.

Originally built in 1983, the trail will undergo significant improvements including the installation of over 12,000 linear feet of 3-6-foot-wide soft surface trail that will roughly parallel the existing concrete path through the 350-acre Bear Creek Greenbelt.

According to information on lakewood.org, the new soft surface trail is being built to alleviate congestion along the existing concrete trail by providing an alternative natural surface for walkers and runners.

Improvements will also be made to the concrete trail by widening sections to 10 feet when feasible, by softening trail curves to extend sight lines and replacing damaged concrete to mitigate hazards.

Aside from the improvements to the trails themselves, a new restroom facility will be added, existing bridges will be replaced, and signage will be improved.

The overall project is targeted for completion in the summer of 2023.

You can learn more about the project, upcoming detours, and ask a question of the project team by visiting LakewoodTogether.org/BearCreekTrail or calling 303-987-7800.
