Those who’ve been down Ford Street lately know that the Coors brewery's exterior looks a bit more colorful these days.
Molson Coors is celebrating the brewery’s 150th anniversary with a special mural on the building’s west side, which will be 45 feet high and 165 feet wide. The mural’s scheduled to be finished by mid-September.
Arvada-based artist Julia Williams has designed the mural, which will honor the brewery’s past, present and future, according to a Molson Coors press release.
Williams, also called “The Designosaur,” has worked on other local projects, including the Triceratops Trailhead mural alongside U.S. Highway 6 near 19th Street. The brewery’s mural will have elements of the Colorado landscape and locally grown crops like barley and hops that are crucial to the brewing process.
Williams and Peter J. Coors, director of the Coors brewery modernization project, described how the new mural would serve as a visual representation of the brewery’s legacy and future in the Golden community.
“We’ve had the privilege of building a community full of incredible employees and supporters in Colorado,” Peter J. Coors said of his ancestor Adolph Coors founding the brewery in 1873. “As we reflect on the last 150 years, we want to celebrate this milestone with a mural that honors our history, while demonstrating our continued commitment to Golden for generations to come.”
Along with the mural, Molson Coors is celebrating its sesquicentennial with its community partners through special grants and events. It recently contributed $50,000 to the Foothills Art Center’s forthcoming Astor House campus, and is sponsoring the Sept. 22-23 Wild West Oktoberfest.
