A dip in asphalt and concrete costs have created an opportunity for Jefferson County to get more roadwork done this year than had initially planned.

Jeffco’s Development and Transportation Director Jeanie Rossillon told the Board of County Commissioners on Sept. 11 that her department had roughly $50,000 of extra concrete repair funding remaining from the summer construction season due to supply cost savings.

“We still have a need to replace more concrete,” Rossillon said.

Jeffco holds a one-year $1 million contract with Concrete Express for asphalt and concrete work, expiring in February 2013.

Rossillon proposed amending the county’s current concrete removal and replacement contract with up to $500,000 of additional work this fall. Rossillon said she expected only half of the money to be spent on projects due to the short amount of time remaining in the calendar year and colder weather approaching.

The proposal also called for the extension of the Concrete Express contract through the end of June 2013.

In a very brief regular meeting last week, Commissioners Donald Rosier, 3rd district, and Faye Griffin, 2nd District, approved the contract extension at last week’s commission meeting as part of their consent agenda. Commissioner John Odom was excused.
