Two appointed to library board of trustees

Jefferson County Public Library (JCPL) has announced the appointment of John Bodnar and Julia Hill-Nichols to the library board of trustees. The Jefferson County Board of County Commissioners appointed the trustees on May 29. They were selected from a list of five applicants, and will serve three-year terms through March 31, 2015. Bodnar and Hill-Nichols are replacing Lynne Heinekamp, who resigned from the board in January, and T.J Carney, whose second consecutive term as a library trustee expired in March.

Phone scam warning

The Colorado Division of Insurance warns consumers never to give out personal banking information over the phone.

There have been reports of Colorado residents receiving a call from someone claiming to be a representative of the “Colorado Insurance Commission.”

The caller says the state has taken over the consumer’s insurance company and wants to send a $399 refund check to the consumer. The caller says that he can directly deposit the check if the consumer would provide account information. The division wants consumers to know that its representatives never ask consumers for banking information. Also, there is no such entity as the “Colorado Insurance Commission.”

CASA in need of volunteers

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Jefferson and Gilpin Counties is recruiting volunteers for the July 2012 training class. Volunteers are appointed by a judge to cases of child abuse and neglect to represent the best interests of the children involved.

Volunteers must be older than 21 and complete 40 hours of training. Volunteers give 15-20 hours a month to help abused and neglected children in that community have a more hopeful future. Youth Works Job Safari

All youth ages 14 to 21 are encouraged to attend Jefferson County’s YouthWorks Job Safari, a no-cost summer camp that provides youth with an opportunity to explore different job industries. Participating organizations include Flight for Life, city of Golden Fire Department, Jeffco Sheriff’s Office, city of Golden Water Treatment Plant, Sports Authority Field, United States Geological Survey and more.

Youth will have the opportunity to tour these facilities, and learn about job requirements, what a typical day looks like and what kind of education is required for that industry. These visits allow youth to identify career interests through observation of employees’ daily routines and working environments.

The Job Safari is also an opportunity for youth to learn about the academic, technical, and interpersonal skills required for a particular job and how they connect to school, college work, and their goals for the future. The Job Safari takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays in July from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jefferson County Workforce Center. Lunch is provided for each site visit. New head for Environmental Health Services

Jefferson County Public Health has named Jim Rada as the new director of environmental health services. Rada has worked in the field for the past 26 years, and has been the manager of environmental health in both Summit and Garfield counties.

He most recently served as environmental health manager of Garfield County for the past seven years.
