Anyone who has done much hiking or biking on a Jefferson County Open Space trail lately likely knows that the already-busy trail system seems to be more popular than ever. And if you've had the misfortune of trying to park at one of those trails, then you surely know the consequences of that increased popularity pretty well.
But now, Jeffco is launching a new pilot partnership with Lyft that is aiming to give the county's open space users some relief — at least when it comes to visiting four of the system's most challenging to park at trailheads.
The four trailheads are the Table Mountain Park - West Trailhead, South Table Mountain Park - Camp George West Trailhead, South Table Mountain Park - Golden Hills Access, and White Ranch Park - East Trailhead. The discounts, which will be automatically applied, will be valid during park hours seven days a week.
According to a JCOS press release announcing the pilot, those locations were selected based upon visitor volume, available designated parking, reducing neighborhood/overflow parking, and illegal parking. Additional variables such as cell service and driver availability were also considered.
The pilot program will run through Dec. 31. At that point, JCOS will determine whether it will continue to find the program and expand it to serve more trailheads. Beyond relieving parking congestion, JCOS said the pilot will also provide better access to people who want to visit the trails but do not have a car.
