Near the end of each school year, the Golden Elks visit local third-grade classes to pass out books for the club’s summer reading program.
This year, the Golden Elks went to Welchester and Kyffin elementary schools.
The students are to read the books during their summer break and write a book report. They turn in their book reports when they enter the fourth grade, and the Golden Elks award prizes for the best book reports.
Some of the books that the third-graders were received this year were educational biographies of historical figures and events and some were children’s fiction — the “Diary of a Wimpy Zombie” series.
