Annual monthlong event in February features special events at local cultural establishments

The month of February is an odd time of the year. It comes well past the joy of the holiday season, and is much too early to start getting excited for spring.

February is when the winter blahs can start to take a toll on people — except in Golden, that is.

“We created (Heart and Soul of Golden) to give people a reason to get out of the house,” said Barb Warden, a board member of the Golden Cultural Alliance, “and to generally liven things up during a dark time of the year.”

Getting its start by the Golden Cultural Alliance in 1998, Heart and Soul of Golden is an annual, month-long event that takes place beginning on Feb. 1. Its purpose, Warden said, is to celebrate all things cultural by “heightening awareness of the surprising number of cultural organizations in Golden.”

These organizations include, but are not limited to, several local museums and various arts and entertainment groups and venues, as well as some special events.

During Heart and Soul of Golden, Golden Cultural Alliance member organizations amp things up by featuring a variety of unique special events, specific to this time of the year.

One example is the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum and its miniature quilts.

“The Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum hopes to bring some added sunshine to the city with the miniature quilts on display at many of the participating merchants throughout downtown Golden,” said Karen Roxburgh, the executive director of the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum. “The quilt makers put in a lot of their own heart and soul into making each quilt (and) we hope they will inspire each viewer.”
