Jeffco website aims to become bilingual boon

Site to help families with young kids

Jennifer Anton, Strategic Initiatives Coordinator for Jeffco Public Health, is excited about a new project. So excited that she “talks a mile a minute” when speaking about it, she said.

“It’s a mobile-friendly hub of resources for families with young children,” she says.

One reason she’s so excited is that according to Anton, there are a lot of great resources for families and caregivers with young children in Jeffco, but they had always been hard to find individually.

However, that all changed about a year ago when a new website, jeffcofamiliescolorado.org was created, bringing all of those resources to one online location for families to find and take advantage of more easily.

Launch site

It started when several organizations came together in a program called the LAUNCH together initiative.

LAUNCH together allowed those organizations to form partnerships, to more effectively serve the community’s needs.

A big part of LAUNCH’s ethos is community engagement — bringing the community into the process, and learning from them about how to most effectively create programs that will be useful to, and accepted by the people they are designed to help.

Jeffcofamiliescolorado.org was born of this community engagement. It allows users to find child care, preschool and enrichment programs for Jeffco’s school-age kids. It also has sections on perinatal mental health, the impacts of trauma and information about in-home or virtual visits which bring parenting coaches into homes to help teach skills benefitting parents and children. Another feature Anton is particularly excited about are the website’s blogs.

“The “latest childhood news” section is really the blog,” she says. “Once those blogs hit the site and we promote them, the activity spikes.”

She said the blogs are a really great way for users to engage with the site, and a fantastic way for her team to learn which topics users are really interested in.

Anton said another added benefit of the community-driven process that was used in developing the site is that it makes the programs more culturally responsive.

Jeffcofamiliescolorado.org resources are available in English and Spanish. She says the Spanish version of the site is not just a translation of the English, but rather, it’s trans-created to make it more culturally responsive for Spanish speaking families. It also comes with a Spanish web address to help build more trust in the Latino community.

A new social media campaign to bring more awareness to the website recently launched. Anton said the goal is to reach out to people through Facebook and other social media channels, not only to expose more potential users to the site, but to engage with people in the community and find out more about the help they need.
