It’s definitely not your grandpa’s library anymore.  You can still check out your literary favorites, but the march of time, which has seen offerings like audio books, videos, compact discs and DVDs appear on library shelves in the past, has taken another significant leap forward — in Jeffco, anyway. Chromebook laptops can now be checked out by library patrons to assist with job searches.

According to its website, Jefferson County Public Library (JCPL) has partnered with the Jefferson County Business and Workforce Center (JCBW) to make it possible.

“These laptops will be available to Jefferson County residents starting in November. You can reserve them by speaking with Library staff or using the JCPL online catalog,” the County’s announcement said.

Chromebooks can be checked out for a period of 60 days. The due date will not be renewable.

According to JCPL, Chromebooks have built-in WiFi/data for an internet connection wherever you are. The laptops allow you to create resumes and cover letters, explore other job aid tools and conduct online interviews. Along with the laptop, users also will receive a power cord, mouse, quick-start sheet and a bag.

The county’s announcement of the new resource said the Chromebook program is part of JCPL’s commitment to meeting the needs of all community members.

“Remote work has changed the way people think about when and how they want to work, leading to more and more employees across the United States either being displaced from their jobs or voluntarily resigning from their positions in order to look for better employment,” the announcement said, citing an April 2021 report from the U.S. Labor Department that said a record 4 million Americans quit their job that month.

If you’re ready to reserve a Chromebook to assist in finding your next career opportunity, visit jeffcolibrary.bibliocommons.com or your local branch to start the process.

Jeffco residents also can get help learning how to use the devices through JCPL’s Jobs and Careers Featured Guide by visiting jeffcolibrary.org/job-help/.
