On Nov. 19, the Jefferson County jail announced that 57 inmates and 13 staff members had recently tested positive for COVID-19.

A press release from the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office states that a few inmates who were housed in general population modules began displaying symptoms on Nov. 2 and were immediately isolated.

All inmates in the two affected modules have since been tested.

According to the release, most of the inmates who tested positive are asymptomatic. Michael Taplin with the Sheriff’s Department reports that there have been no hospitalizations among either the staff or inmates. Inmates who tested negative have been moved to unaffected areas of the facility.

Currently, the jail reports that 5-50 inmates are tested each day and results are received in 7-9 days. The release states that the Jefferson County jail “continues to follow all national, state and county guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19 in a congregate living facility.

“The health and safety of inmates and staff is our top priority, and we are disappointed to be experiencing a second outbreak of COVID-19 in our jail,” Jeffco Sheriff Jeff Shrader said in a statement. “We have taken numerous measures to stop this disease from affecting individuals in our custody, and we will continue to seek ways to prevent its spread.”
