As the temperature outside gets colder, the decor inside Period 6 Studio in Golden Ridge gets cozier.

The shop, owned by Kiley Handy and her mother Ann Fattor, is gearing up for its seventh Christmas season offering cards, art and what they call, “punctuated ephemera” — from the written word to funky jewelry.

“One thing that’s very important to us is that we carry independent makers and artisans,” Handy said. “We think it is really something very special to allow people to do what they’re passionate about. And to be able to write them a check for that is really fun.”

All products carried are American made because the mother, daughter duo like to meet the artists that they support. Many Colorado-made products can be found at the shop for that reason.

Greeting cards take up a lot of inventory. They were the first thing stocked because, as Handy says, “you always need a card.”

Now, cards are how Handy and Fattor connect deeper with their customers.

“We learn about their stories and what they’re going through,” Handy said. “It becomes very special because you get to share that with them and you know that they are letting you be part of their story in that way.”

Connecting with customers and connecting customers with affordable art is Handy’s favorite part of running the shop.

“You feel like you’re introducing someone to a friend that they never knew they needed,” she said. “They come in with a story or a gift they need to buy and they find something that resonates with them — an artist with a similar background or from the same town… We carry a lot of reclaimed pieces and sometimes people will find an element in those reclaimed pieces they connect with and it becomes really special. You can really see how we’re all interconnected through things. I think things have a lot of intrinsic value and when somebody has made something there’s a lot of meaning behind it.”

Handy and Fattor both make handmade leather journals and are preparing to launch a stationary and home good line called Granola Graffiti next year.

Gearing up for the holiday season, Period 6 is stocking new products regularly including a jewelry line made out of paper pulp; candles made out of coconut wax; and a plethora of Christmas cards.

One of the items found exclusively at Period 6 are ornaments hand painted by Golden resident Janet Warren Herbert that feature various landmarked around town.

“We love being in the community,” Handy said, “and being a reflection of those who come in the store.”
